About Rail in Indonesia
Indonesia operates one of Southeast Asia's most extensive rail networks, concentrated on the island of Java. PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) runs services ranging from budget economy trains to premium intercity expresses. Java's rail corridor connects the major cities of Jakarta, Bandung, Yogyakarta, Solo, Surabaya, and Malang — covering roughly 1,000km of track through volcanic highlands, river valleys, and agricultural plains.
The Network
Long-distance services operate across three broad tiers: Eksekutif (Executive), Bisnis (Business), and Ekonomi (Economy). Premium branded services such as the Argo Wilis, Argo Bromo Anggrek, and Gajayana sit at the top of the Eksekutif tier with reserved seating, air conditioning, and on-board dining.
Booking
Tickets are sold via the KAI Access app or at station booking offices. International cards are not accepted on the KAI website — use the app or a third-party platform such as Tiket.com or Traveloka.
